and wander FUKUOKA
and wander is a brand that features a wide range of unisex items available in various colours. Each item has its own unique cutting and details, which you only notice when you hold it in your hands, giving you the pleasure of discovering something new each time. In-store, we employ a movable layout system that utilises a grid system suspended from the ceiling, allowing for flexible arrangement of lighting, hangers, posters, and fitting rooms. While sharing this consistent system for all the brand’s stores, we customise each store’s space to suit its unique environment and target customers, aiming to provide distinct design experiences at each location.
This project involves opening a store in the newly constructed Fukuoka One Building. To extend the 1500mm grid, which had previously only been used on ceilings, to floors and walls, the grid size was unified to 750mm squares, half the original size. This reduces visual noise caused by size inconsistencies, simplifies the space as background, and makes it easier for customers to focus on the products.
The grid-based arrangement of merchandise does not impose a clear directionality on the space, creating a flat impression that blurs the distinction between zones. On the other hand, it promotes free movement, and in this project, the VMD has become fully proficient in this grid configuration, making it more effective. As a result, a ‘faceless architectural space’ without a defined character has been realised. (Jo Nagasaka)
